It's so distracting. I must say I was very sceptical about this movie as I'd never heard of it before, so seeing it was on TV I decided to look it up on here.

A very low rating and a dubious start to the film did not fill me with confidence. However the more I watched the more enthralled I became.

From early on you get the impression there is more to the story than meets the eye, and indeed there are numerous sub plots, this is not a movie to watch casually.

The various twists and turns for the most part come totally out of the blue, but slowly combine to explain each other gradually, pulling you further in till the final ending which I must admit came as a total surprise to me This film contains some dark humor and a surprise twist ending, but in my opinion it's barely a grade B-movie.

We've seen many similar type movies over the years, so, to me, this one came across as rather a "poor cousin" in comparison to some of the others that are named by several reviewers on this site.

This is one of those films that if I revealed too much about the plot details I would be writing too many spoilers, so let's just say all is not what it seems on screen.

However, when the reasons for what's occurring are revealed it just seemed quite flimsy to me.

This movie marks the directorial debut of acclaimed actor Jackie Earle Haley, who also is excellent in a supporting role here.

Robert Lowell also makes his screen debut as the scriptwriter. All in all, the film is not going to win any awards, but I was interested enough to want to know how it would all turn out, even though some of the journey was a bit painful.

In the end, it all just seemed more of a gimmick than anything else. I felt that this film was well thought out and for a guy who is generally pretty good at figuring out twists in a film this one was successful in tripping me up.

This is not a big budget film by modern day Hollywood standards but felt it was casted very well and very entertaining. The story line and the characters keep you engaged and there are no "slow" points in this film.

It has a great balance of action scenes as well as intellectual content to keep all types entertained. A film I can honestly say is worth seeing and you would not be disappointed in this film unless you are an "impossible to impress or please" kind of person.

This movie is considerably better than the low ratings would have you believe. The plot is strong, with a few good twists along away the way.

If there is one criticism, and I'm guessing this is where the low ratings come in its that the production quality could have been better.

While the acting is good, some of the scenes feel a little too stifled and not tight enough.

I think the director missed a trick not upping the pace. This isn't an action movie, although it would have played better with a more fluid rhythm.

The relationship between the characters could have been developed more during the plot which would only have added to the brilliant plot twist at the end.

My advice to anyone considering watching this, ignore the ratings and watch it. Its OK, but could have been so much better.

All the guys proceed well but the actors, including the scene-stealing, acquit themselves quite amusingly, as does director Haley, who also plays one of Travolta's henchmen.

Working from a chatty script not as cleverly hatched as it likes to think it is, Haley whips it into something decently entertaining even as you begin thinking about how truly great "Get Shorty" and Travolta's Chili Palmer were midway through those double-crossing criminal activities.

Criminal Activities is overall a sneaky, snaky little crime thriller with some pretty impressive plot twists with some stylish touches and committed performances which enliven this otherwise not special crime thriller.

My initial reaction is to suggest the bar should lowered a bit and audiences and reviewers should treat the film charitably because it is a directorial debut produced on a modest budget.

But one of my all-time favorite films, "Lone Star," was produced with considerably less money, even adjusting for inflation, and films like "Citizen Kane," "Blood Simple," "Throw Momma From The Train" and "Reservoir Dogs" were also directorial debuts.

But perhaps those were exceptions to the rule. The film has several very strong elements. Haley and Gathegi steal their scenes with strong performances and clever dialogue.

The plot has some satisfying twists and reversals and a huge reveal at the end that casts everything we've seen in an entirely different perspective.

The reveal is on the same order of magnitude as "The Usual Suspects" and "The Sixth Sense"; however, it is not nearly as satisfying or as gratifying.

The film fails to foreshadow or leave sufficient ambiguities, so the reversal comes off as a complete surprise and not an alternate interpretation that the audience can easily assimilate.

One gets the impression that Haley's performance is exactly what he expects from his actors. Gerry is simple, direct, unquestioningly loyal, but clever enough to understand the bigger picture and to take his own initiative when changing circumstances demand it.

The four protagonists lack such qualities and their predicament quickly spirals out of control as a consequence.

The movie's greatest failing is that it never develops any real sympathy for the four protagonists, who come across as inept doofuses.

Technically, the film kind of gets the job done without much panache. The constant motion from the jiggly-cam shots could leave viewers reaching for the Dramamine.

Many of the shots are dark, not low-key, but dark. Effects of gunfire are uneven. In one shot, a character seems to slap a blood capsule against his chest, but it doesn't seem to rupture or the effect is lost in the dimly lit room.

Other scenes seem to have employed the same special effects supervisor who worked on some of the Monty Python films.

The less said about Travolta's makeup, the better. The film clearly draws inspiration from Quentin Tarantino and Elmore Leonard. While it fails to match their accomplishments, it does a reasonable job in its emulation.

I'll watch it again to look for clues to the big reveal. It might have been much more interesting with a few deftly planted clues that perhaps all is not as it seems.

Review: I can honestly say that I didn't have high hopes for this movie but it didn't turn out to be totally bad.

I know it sounds confusing but it's pretty straight forward. Whilst holding Marques in a derelict building, Gerry Jackie Earle Haley is on the hunt for Eddie's niece so the 4 best friends are stuck with Marques, waiting for instructions from Eddie.

When the storyline unfolds, you soon realise that all is not what it seems, in a Usual Suspects type of way but I do have to watch the movie again to truly understand the major twist.

The acting isn't bad from the whole cast, especially Edi Gathegi and Michael Pitt but the professionalism from John Travolta, makes the rest of the cast look quite amateur.

The character that I really liked throughout the film was Jackie Earle Haley, who also directed the movie, so he really gave his all to this project.

It's not in the same league as Usual Suspects but it's a watchable movie which isn't bad for the directors debut. He really has an impressive portfolio, which is understandable because he's an unique actor who brings intensity to all of his roles.

As for this movie, I think the ending was extremely rushed and a lot of the scenes with the 4 kidnappers were average. He was lucky to get such a diverse cast, who all brought something different to the project but I would have liked to have seen more from Travolta and Haley, who were the best thing in the movie.

I highly recommend this film as you will be happy with the outcome. FlashCallahan 5 December Four friends who work in the city acting on an inside tip, invest in a 'sure thing'.

But the deal goes sour, and they find themselves being indebted to the mob for nearly half a million dollars. The only way they can clear there debt is by kidnapping a member of another organised crime unit, and holding them for 24 hours.

But things are not what they seem The makers have obviously been inspired by the likes of Boiler Room and Reservoir Dogs, and while it's always a risky move to try and impersonate the likes of Tarantino, Jackie Earl Haley has done a decent job with his film.

Character wise, the film offers nothing new. The group who are in trouble consist of the quiet one, the nervous one, the loose cannon, and the one who doesn't do much, but then does a lot near the end.

Then we have the heavies. Again, we have the quiet one, the muscle, and we have have the talky one, played by the director.

Here it's business as usual for the narrative. When these two heavies are I a difficult situation, the talky one goes and tells a story about how a mark on his body occurred.

This trope happens in a lot of these types of film nowadays. And then you have your almost washed up A-list star, playing the big man, the boss.

And this time the guest star is one John Travolta. Don't be fooled by the one sheet, the mans hardly in it, but when he is he makes the film all the more watchable, but for two reasons.

Firstly, he's brilliant in these sort of sarcastic roles, the one where the bad but has the swagger, and knows he can't do no wrong. Secondly, what on earth has he done with his face and hair?

Once the main plot is implemented, it's a war of nerves for the group of fellows, as they start to bond with the victim, and in turn, the victim begins to play them off each other, and tensions rise.

What saves the film from mediocrity is the ending, and showing us the set up with the pay off, it makes for quite entertaining viewing.

That, and the soundtrack is stupendously over the top. So it's nothing special, it's funny in places, Travolta steals the movie from everyone, and it never once threatens to challenge the grey matter.

Perfect for a cold winters afternoon. Anyone involved with this movie should just be ashamed of themselves.

The script, if there was one, was just a bunch of guys yelling f-words at each other. Worthless, f, f, f, this, and f, f, f, that. Shaky cam shot by a year-old.

Not one interesting visual. Forget it. Beyond lame. This is a product with a major star Travolta vying for your consumer dollar.

The problem is, it's utter garbage. Do not waste a minute of your life on this sad rip-off. My advice to John is this, please man the industry has better lifelike men wigs, please seek a new hairdresser tyvm Big Deb gmail.

Once again, everyone is comparing a low budget flick to mega Hollywood films. While this film does feature John Travolta, it's obvious that they just used his name to get the audience's interest.

But don't let that dissuade you from watching it. All the acting from the lesser-known actors is still very good, and in fact, might actually even be better.

Travolta plays your typical mob boss, but the guys involved are anything but your mob underlings. It's a formula I've seen before, but the twist later on in the film gives it a unique twist that made it worthwhile.

Even if stuff didn't make sense during the film, it came together at the end. It's nothing that will rock your world, but it was enjoyable enough for an hour and a half.

This is an O. The story feels like it's been done before. But all the reveals and twists come nicely placed and make sense at the end of the movie.

Easy comparison would be "bone tomahawk" which feels like it's been done with the same sort of formula. I think it is good for the indie movies and this just delivers more than usual.

Also fair to say that this is more a thriller than an action flick. Some of the scenes also feel a little dragged. Definitely worth a watch.

Pic is about four young guys who reunite at an ex-classmate's funeral. One mentions to the others inside information on a stock that is a guaranteed lock to make them instant millionaires.

Unfortunately, the deal goes south along with their investment. Things go from bad to worse: one of them borrowed his share of the money from a mobster.

Written by Mike Fleming Jr. Warren tells them about a stock that's about to go up - he has insider trading info - and the agent who has been stockpiling the stock is getting nervous about being caught and needs to dump his shares.

Noah says he can get it. The stock tanks and wipes out the investment. He will wipe the slate clean if they will help him with a problem he's having - kidnap the brother of the man who kidnapped his niece so that he can get her back.

Boy could this have been better. It's a complicated story, and a good one, but the script and direction aren't strong enough to carry it.

It's similar to many other films of today with its surprises, but at the end of the film I was left confused about certain money issues. There is an homage to Pulp Fiction with the presence of Travolta and the guys' initial meeting at the Royale.

And it has gross violence, just like Tarantino. It's just not Tarantino. The acting is uneven with some good performances.
